Diwali Crackers
09.28.06 (10:41 pm)   [edit]

Diwali is the festival of lights and crackers. People get up before sunrise, apply oil to their heads and take head bath. They wear new clothes, light lamps and incense sticks in front of God Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. Offerings of flowers are made to them. Prasadam is also distributed among the devotees. All shops are kept open in the evening and they will be brightly lit. Shopkeepers worship Goddess Lakshmi in the evening. On this occasion they invite friends, relatives, business associates and employees. They distribute sweets. Then they burn crackers.

On Diwali day, children would be very enthusiastic to burn crackers. Their primary interest in the festivals stems from the fact that they get new clothes to wear, eat plenty of sweets and burn crackers. It gives them immense joy. The burning of crackers is symbolic of the triumph of good over evil. On this day, Lord Krishna and Styabhama got rid of the menace of Narakasura and restored peace and order. To commemorate the occasion, people fire crackers and express their happiness.

On Diwali day, the sky will be glowing brightly with the light of the burning crackers. There are many varieties of crackers to burn. Right from roll caps to rockets, the range is quite wide. Some of them are relatively safe. Roll caps and sparklers are ideal for children. They can insert the roll in the pistol and fire away. Sparklers have been traditionally children’s items. Bombs of different sizes are also fired. Some brands such as Laxmi, Bird and Double Sound are very popular. Catherine Wheel is referred to as ‘Zameen Chakkar’ in India. They are quite popular.

Flowerpots are available in many sizes, from small to big. Small flowerpots are preferred by children and youngsters. Threads are also popular. Being stuffed with incendiary material, they burn brightly from one end to the other with sparkles and it is pleasant to watch them. Rockets are also popular among youngsters. They zoom into the sky with swooshing sound if they are kept erect and fired. They become dangerous if they change their direction midway as it sometimes happens. They can cause burns and injury to people in their trajectory.

There are many fancy crackers. You have a string of 10,000 bombs which burst over a 10-15 minute period. Double sound bombs burst both on the ground and in the air. There are others that shower colorful sparkles once they go up in the air. Small tablets grow into long snakes when lighted and it would be interesting to watch their wavy movements as they grow out of the tablet.

Though it is pleasant to burst crackers, it is always safe to keep safe distance from them. Elders should be around whenever children are burning crackers. Before they embark on the activity, they should be strongly advised about the hazards of fire and asked to adopt safe methods. Media messages also harp this aspect quite powerfully. Various safety measures help avoid accidents on this joyous occasion.
